The Sonko Rescue Team is a PR gimmick with members unqualified for duty, Nairobi county Environment executive Evans Ondieki has said.
“He is just empty-headed. Whatever he does is showbiz. He waits until there is a disaster and brings people in uniform who stand at a scene and do nothing. That is deception,” Ondieki said.
He was speaking on the sidelines of a policy dialogue forum organised by the Kenya Alliance of Residents Associations on Thursday.
Ondieki said the members of the team lack basic rescue requirements.
“Rescue operations are very technical. You need people with medical backgrounds, who can attend to patients. When you have a rescue team, you must give us (the county government) inventory of the team’s units,” he said.
“It’s not enough to just wear the uniform and say you have a rescue team.”
Nairobi Senator Mike Sonko launched the team in January to offer various services to Nairobi residents.
Its entourage includes a Land Curiser, Limousine, Mercedes-Benz S-Class and a Hammer.
Ambulance, hearse, breakdown, wedding transport, water, security and emergency response are some of the services offered.
