Kenya: Kenya National Union of Teachers ( KNUT) has condemned Thursday’s Garissa attack which left 147 innocent students dead and over 70 wounded.

The union condoled with the families of the victims and wished quick recovery to those injured.

“We condemn in the strongest terms possible the attack by the Al-Shaabab that shamelessly targeted the armless students who had to travel to that part of the country to pursue education and a good future,” read part of the statement.

In view of the attack, KNUT has asked the government to immediately and permanently close down the Garissa University College and all surviving students to be transferred to other universities in safer parts of the country to pursue their future.

The teacher’s body has also asked the State to turn the institution into a security installation and maybe hand it over to the police for purposes of their own training.

They also stated that the Garrissa Teachers Training College survived the attack because they had closed a day earlier and therefore urged the government not to reopen the institution come May, but hand it over to the military and transfer all students in the college.

The union has ordered all teachers working in North Eastern to leave if they feel unsafe. They urged the government to set up a recovery strategy for learners and tutors working in the area.

The body also urged the President to sack Education Cabinet Secretary Jacob Kaimenyi stating that he does not listen to them.

“We urge President Uhuru Kenyatta to consider removing the Minister for Education Prof Jacob Kaimenyi from the education docket because his continued stay will demolish the entire sector since he doesn’t listen to the multi-sectoral voices in his ministry.”
