A little girl in a white dress waited with a bouquet of flowers at the bottom of the Air Force One staircase when US president Barack Obama landed at the JKIA on Friday night.

With a matching tiara of flowers in her hair, a cream cape and satin gloves, Joan Wamaitha stood ready for the most exciting day of her life.

The 8-year-old is the envy of many as she became the first girl to receive the most powerful man in the world, and hand him a bouquet of yellow tulips and tiger lilies.

Obama warmly hugged her and together they posed for photos before he got down to the formalities of being received by President Uhuru Kenyatta and other state officials.

Wamaitha, an orphan, is a class two pupil at Mariakani primary school in Nairobi.

Air Force One touched down at 8.10pm Friday, starting the first of Obama’s visit back to his homeland.

Among officials who visited him were Foreign Affairs CS Amina Mohamed and Interior CS Joseph Nkaissery, Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero and National Assembly Swpeaker Justin Muturi.

Also in the welcoming party was Muhoho Kenyatta, Uhuru’s second son.

The US President started the tour with a family dinner during which he chatted amiably with step-grandmother Sarah, half-sister Auma and other relatives.

On Saturday, he officially opened the 6th Global Entrepreneurship alongside Uhuru, at the UN headquarters in Gigiri.

He has visited the 1998 bomb blast site at the August 7th Memorial Park, and will dine with Uhuru tonight at State House, Nairobi.
