Nairobi Senator Mike Sonko has said he will continue to support Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua, who is his “personal and political friend”.
Terming Mutua the “best choice” for the county, Sonko said he is not interested in running against him for the seat in 2017
“I want to say no thank you to them but I have no interest in Machakos, and I am happy with what Mutua is doing,” he said.
“I am a devout believer in his ideology of Maendeleo chap chap, which is transforming Machakos county.”
In a statement issued in Machakos on Thursday, Sonko said he is in the Jubilee Alliance to stay and is only interested in serving Nairobi residents.
He said he and Mutua share the belief in helping those who elected them.
Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka wants Sonko to replace Mutua.
Last Saturday, he openly invited the senator, a native of Machakos, to join Wiper and run for governor.
It is understood that Kalonzo has been in talks with Sonko and has even sent emissaries to persuade him to relocate his political base to Machakos.
Kalonzo has fallen out with Mutua and accused the governor of working with Jubilee to undermine him.
The governor has been working with MPs opposed to the Wiper leader while insisting that his focus is on development.
Mutua has been termed he “new kid on the block” in Ukambani politics, and has stirred the public with development projects that have taken short periods.
He said he wants to unite the region’s leaders, irrespective of political affiliations, for focus on development, not supremacy battles.
“I always say that there is no romance in poverty. It is wrong for any leader to aspire to become a tribal kingpin yet his people are poor,” he said.
