Kenyan Diaspora Community in Richmond, Virginia Mourns the Passing of Beloved Matriarch Agatha Nyakinyua Karuri

The Kenyan diaspora community in Richmond, Virginia, is mourning the loss of one of its most respected pioneers and community pillars, Agatha Nyakinyua Karuri, who passed away peacefully in her sleep on Saturday, July 11, 2026, at 10:35 a.m.

She was 82 years old.

Known for her unwavering faith, generosity, and nurturing spirit, Agatha was more than a mother and grandmother—she was a matriarch of the Kenyan community in Richmond, opening her home to countless newly arrived Kenyans during the late 1980s and early 1990s and helping many families establish themselves in the United States.

As members of the Kenyan diaspora continue to pay tribute, many remember her as a woman whose kindness touched generations.

“We lost a matriarch of the local Kenyan community who played a significant role in hosting many during the early ’90s. Her home became a place of comfort, guidance, and hope for countless Kenyans starting a new life in America.”

Early Life

Agatha Nyakinyua Karuri was born on January 3, 1944, to the late Apollo Karuri Gachagua and Phoebe Muthoni.

She was the sister of the late Simon Gachagua and the late Margaret Gathigia Karuri.

After losing her mother at a young age, Agatha was lovingly raised by her grandparents, Gathigia wa Gatheru and Mwaniki wa Kanguru, with additional support from Charity Karungari and Nguthiru wa Kamau. Their love, discipline, and guidance shaped the compassionate woman she would become before she later reunited with her father in Nanyuki.

Education

Agatha began her education at Ngunguru Primary School before transferring to Nanyuki DEB Primary School, where she completed her Certificate of Primary Education (CPE) in 1958.

Although educational opportunities were limited during that era, she developed a strong work ethic and resilience that would define the rest of her life.

Career Dedicated to Serving Others

Agatha’s professional life reflected her lifelong passion for caring for people.

She began working as a nanny before relocating to Nairobi, where she joined the University of Nairobi in 1973 as a custodial worker. She faithfully served the institution in a full-time, permanent, pensionable position until 1989.

Colleagues remember her as dependable, hardworking, and deeply compassionate.

That same year, she immigrated to the United States, joining the growing wave of Kenyan immigrants seeking better opportunities abroad.

In America, she continued nannying before dedicating many years to elderly caregiving, serving seniors with patience, dignity, and kindness until her retirement in 2017.

A Pillar of the Kenyan Diaspora in Richmond

While many knew Agatha as a devoted caregiver, those within the Kenyan diaspora remember her for something even greater—her commitment to people.

After settling in Richmond, Virginia, she became one of the community’s most welcoming figures.

At a time when many Kenyan immigrants were arriving with limited support systems, Agatha opened her home to newcomers, providing temporary accommodation, guidance, meals, encouragement, and friendship.

Many families who today call Virginia home first found comfort through her generosity.

Her legacy lives not only through her own family but also through the many lives she quietly transformed.

A Woman of Strong Christian Faith

Faith remained central throughout Agatha’s life.

She was baptized at PCEA Tumutumu, later worshipped at Chrisco Church in Nairobi, and eventually became a faithful member of Faith Landmarks Church in Richmond, Virginia.

Church members remember her as a humble servant, prayer warrior, and dependable believer who demonstrated her faith through acts of kindness.

Her home was always filled with laughter, love, and wisdom as she cherished every opportunity to spend time with her grandchildren.

Friendships That Lasted a Lifetime

After moving to Nairobi around 1970, Agatha lived in Kariobangi, Jericho, and later Pangani–Juja Road.

It was during these years that she formed lifelong friendships with Anna Gichigo (Mama John) and Monica Nguku, affectionately known as her “bestie.”

Even after relocating to the United States, these friendships remained unbreakable.

Agatha and Monica both settled in Richmond, Virginia, where they continued speaking daily, while she also maintained a close relationship with Mama John despite the distance.

Peaceful Passing

Despite her advancing age, Agatha enjoyed remarkably good health throughout her life.

On Saturday, July 11, 2026, she passed away peacefully in her sleep.

Her family takes comfort in the words of Scripture:

“The Lord gave, and the Lord has taken away; blessed be the name of the Lord.” — Job 1:21
