Lucy Kibaki in hospital for a “routine check-up”

Lucy KibakiLucy Kibaki in hospital: Former president Mwai Kibaki’s press team has said Lucy Kibaki is in hospital for a “routine check-up” and that “there is no cause for alarm”.

“It is merely a routine check up, the kind that your mother and my mother would routinely need to undergo from time to time,” read a statement from the team on Friday.

“Remember our mothers’ health, given their age, cannot be the same as that of average high school girls.”

Lucy, the former First Lady, was admitted to the Nairobi Hospital Intensive Care Unit after falling ill on Thursday night. Sources said she fell ill at her home in Muthaiga, Nairobi.

She arrived at the hospital in an ambulance escorted by two government vehicles at around 5am.

Kibaki was spotted at the hospital in the afternoon and left after an hour.

Witnesses said security was deployed at strategic points with those getting into the hospital being “thoroughly screened” and told to provide badges.

Lucy kept an “uncharacteristically low profile” and did not attend any public functions during part of her time as First Lady.

The last public function that she attended was the ushering in of the new constitution at Uhuru Park, during which she took part in a lively and energetic jig.
