The Kenyan rugby team was accorded a rousing welcome at the JKIA on Tuesday afternoon following a historic win in Singapore.

The team, that flew back in a Qatar Airways plane, was received by officials including Sports CS Hassan Wario and fans.

They are headed to Ole Sereni Hotel where they are expected to receive gifts from the government and the Kenya Airways team.

Nairobi senator Mike Sonko with his rescue team took over the airport as heroes landed a few minutes past 2pm.

Kenya made history at the HSBC Singapore Sevens World Series by winning the first ever world rugby title in seventeen years.

Captain Humphrey Kayange said: “We believed in making our defence really work. Towards day two we stepped up and won.”

“We believe there is going to a big change in the rugby games in Kenya.”

Vice Captain Collins Injera said he was glad that they went to the finals. He said: “I enjoyed the game. Getting the ball from the opponents and scoring was awesome.”

Kenya started the game on a high note by placing two quick unconverted tries in the first few minutes of the game.

The team thrashed defending champions Fiji by 30-7 in the Main Cup finals.

President Uhuru Kenyatta congratulated the team for the remarkable win.

“You have made us proud, our star continues to shine as a powerhouse in sports. A brilliant, confident and powerful effort has earned Team Kenya a richly deserved victory,” he said.
