Former Housing minister Sotia Shitanda’s burial on Saturday was turned into a forum to woo Western voters.

Addressing mourners at Tande Secondary School, President Uhuru Kenyatta announced construction of the Kakamega-Webuye road will resume soon.

He said the contractor was unable to build the road. “We wanted to fire him but he moved to court. We have won the case and construction will resume,โ€ Uhuru said.

The President said Sh380 million medical equipment will be supplied to the Malava Sub-district Hospital.

Deputy President William Ruto said Kakamega will receive 30 milk coolers under the governmentโ€™s dairy development programme.

He said more cash will be set aside to revive Mumias Sugar and expand Butali Sugar Mills. The government has already given Mumias Sh2.2 billion.

Ruto said the government will build technical training institutes in Mumias East, Mumias West, and Lugari subcounties and expand Shamberere Technical College in Malava.

The government last month announced a Sh 6 billion revival plan for Panpaper mills.

Ruto said Jubilee is ready to work with leaders from Western.

โ€œWe are friends and we must move forward as one. We are ready to work with leaders from Western because Jubilee’s wants to build bridges across all communities to ensure unity,โ€ he said.

Cord co-principal Moses Wetangโ€™ula had said the Luhya community feels left out.

โ€œWe want a sense of belonging, ownership, acceptance form the government,โ€ he said.

UDP leader Cyrus Jirongo said Luhyas is ready to work with Jubilee or Cord in a structured way.

โ€œWe have to sit down and talk. You cannot say you are in government when you are a toilet sweeper,โ€ Jirongo said in reference to Luhya MPs who defected to Jubilee in December last year.
