Drama unfolded on Tuesday at Boma Inn, Nyeri County, when a meeting convened by President Uhuru Kenyatta’s campaign team and Jubilee aspirants turned chaotic.

Jubilee aspirants lashed out at Governor Nderitu Gachagua, who is the head of Kenyatta’s campaign team in Nyeri, telling him that they must be added to the team.

The aspirants demanded that the Governor includes them or they leave the Jubilee party since it was not inclusive as the President had promised.

An argument ensued between the aspirants since they could not agree on the agenda of the meeting before they descended on each other with kicks and blows.

While others wanted the issue of campaign team addressed first, another section demanded that they first agree on how the nominations would be conducted.

One of the aspirants – Wambugu Nyamu who is eyeing the senatorial seat – claimed they were being sidelined in favour of the incumbents.

“We thought that Jubilee is an all-inclusive party but it appears that the incumbents are being favoured. We demand to be part of the presidential campaign team,” Mr Nyamu affirmed.

Nyeri legislator Esther Murugi, who was also chosen to lead the presidential campaign team in the county, was absent from the meeting with reports indicating that they were not in good terms with Mr Gachagua.

The Governor was forced to abandon the meeting and warned that no one would be included in the campaign team if they didn’t add any value to Jubilee.

“I was appointed by the President, not you and it was not by accident. To make it clear, we will decide who gets on the team and what value they can add to the campaign,” said Mr Gachagua.

The Governor also warned aspirants, who had threatened to defect from Jubilee, that they would have a difficult time if they dared to.

“Those are just empty threats and if anyone wants to run on a different party we will not stop you. But prepare for a battle because Jubilee will make it very difficult for you to win,” Gachagua warned.
