Former MP Sakuda challenges Muturi for Speaker’s job

Former Kajiado West MP Moses ole Sakuda has declared his intention to vie for the position of Speaker of the National Assembly when Parliament convenes next Thursday.

Sakuda who served in the 10th and 11th Parliament failed to make it back after he run as an Independent candidate when he lost to outgoing Keekonyokie MCA George Sunkuyia who had earlier trounced him in the Jubilee Party nomination.

The former legislator was first elected in the National Assembly after he won the Kajiado North seat following the death of area MP and then Internal Security Minister George Saitoti.

Sakuda said in a statement that he has began the process of picking nomination forms from the offices of the Clerk and will be formally dropping his application on Monday morning.

The former legislator said he stands a better chance of leading business in the 12th Parliament because due to his wide experience in parliamentary matters and that he has served as a Vice-Chairman in the Lands Committee and a member of various House committees.

“I urge all MPs-elect across all the political divide to vote for me as I endeavour to steer the wheel of Parliament, legislative-wise, to greater heights,” he said.

“I have consulted widely with my former colleagues in the National Assembly and across the political divide. They are in full support of my ambition to be the Speaker.”

He holds a Masters Degree in Educational Leadership and Divinity. He previously served as Director of Programmes and Projects in the Ministry of Energy.

The 12 Parliament is slated to have its first sitting on Thursday.

Upon the MPs being sworn-in, they will immediately proceed to elect the Speaker from the pool of the applicants who by law were expected to start applying for the positions.

In the National Assembly, voting for the Speaker will be conducted by 290 MPs, 47 Woman County Representatives and the Nominated Members.
