- The governor from coast region broke ranks with his coalition NASA and voted during the repeat presidential elections
- The governor was the only elected NASA leader who voted in the election on Thursday 26th October
National Super Alliance (NASA), through their leader Raila Odinga called on all their supporters to boycott the repeat presidential elections. This came after Raila and his running mate Kalonzo Musyoka withdrew their candidature in the repeat poll.
However, Taita Taveta Governor Granton Samboja defied the orders of the coalition and participated in the elections.
The first time governor, elected on a Wiper Party ticket, left locals surprised after he turned up at Mwakishimba Primary School in Wundayi constituency to cast his vote.
Since his election in August, Samboja has broken from the NASA ranks by making statements showing support for Jubilee.
He made an appearance at a Jubilee rally earlier this month where he said that he was willing to work with the Jubilee government. The rally was presided over by President Uhuru Kenyatta.
Addressing the press after voting, the former radio presenter said he had exercised his right like any other Kenyan.
โThe process was smooth. Voting is a democratic right of every Kenyan as enshrined in the Constitution,โ he said.
Samboja is also facing a legal battle after his academic degree, purportedly obtained from Kenyatta University, was disowned by the institution.
