Rift widens in NASA as parties claim they are sidelined

NAIROBI, Kenya Dec 1 โ€“ A rift within the National Super Alliance (NASA) has intensified, with a section of Members of Parliament still adamant that they will withdraw their support if the party leadership does not address their concerns which were triggered by the recent House leadership appointments.

The appointments of Suba South MP John Mbadi as Minority Leader and that of Suna East MP Junet Mohammed as Minority Whip in the National Assembly have angered some members within the coalition who have resulted to issuing notice to quit if their grievances are not addressed.

Lawmakers drawn from the Coastal region and those from the Amani National Congress Party have been vocal on the subject saying they were sidelined and that the appointments were not unanimously approved by all members within NASA hence calling for a review on the same.

Lugari Member of Parliament Ayub Savula, backed by his colleagues from ANC, has demanded that he should be given the Deputy Minority Leaderโ€™s position, a slot which is currently held by Kathiani MP Robert Mbui.

The lawmakers also want to be allocated slots for the Chairmanship of the Public Accounts Committee which they want to go to Nambale MP Sakwa Bunyasi, while one of the positions in the House Business Committee they want to be reserved for Emuhaya MP Amboko Milemba.

Lawmakers from the coastal region have also added their voice into the subject and have since protested their exclusion from the House leadership positions.

Led by Msambweni Member of Parliament, Suleiman Dori, the coastal lawmakers have also threatened to pull out their support from the coalition citing neglect and discrimination from the party leadership over the appointments despite overwhelmingly delivering votes for Odinga in the August 8 elections.

But even as the power wrangles within the Opposition outfit continues to escalate each passing day, National Assembly Majority Leader Aden Duale has said the Jubilee Party is ready and more than willing to accommodate those who feel aggrieved in NASA.

โ€œIf they have suffocated you and you are unable to breath, there is a place where there is plenty of tolerance. In Jubilee there is tolerance and there is accommodation, it is only in Jubilee where a pastoralist can lead. Those angered in NASA should run away from ethnic capture and ideological capture,โ€ said Duale.
