Andrew Karanja’s journey from Nakuru, Kenya to pursuing a Master’s in Data Science and Analytics at Grand Valley State University is a story shaped by persistence, clarity of purpose, and the courage to keep going despite setbacks. Growing up in Nakuru, he developed a strong academic foundation early on, later pursuing a degree in Applied Statistics with Computing at Moi university. It was during this time that his interest in data began to take shape, alongside a growing desire to expand his knowledge beyond what was locally available.
Like many ambitious students, Andrew explored multiple pathways to study abroad, applying for scholarships across different countries. While he progressed through several stages in these applications, he often faced rejection, moments that tested his resilience but did not diminish his ambition. Instead, they pushed him to seek a more structured and predictable pathway toward his goal.
That turning point came when he discovered the International Scholars Program. What stood out to him was the clarity of the process; a step-by-step journey from career guidance to university application, funding, and visa preparation. With this structure, he was able to align his background in statistics with a future in data science, eventually securing admission to Grand Valley State University.
As he transitioned into the visa stage, he approached it with the same analytical mindset that defines his field. By studying past interview experiences and participating in preparation sessions, he refined how he communicated his academic goals and future plans.
On the day of the interview, despite the nerves that come with such a defining moment, he remained composed and clear in his responses. When his visa was approved, it marked the culmination of years of effort, resilience, and strategic decision-making.
Now in the United States, Andrew is experiencing a new academic and cultural environment, engaging with diverse peers and adapting to new systems. For him, this opportunity goes beyond personal achievement. His goal is to use data science as a tool for impact, applying his skills to contribute meaningfully to his community and beyond.
His journey reflects a powerful truth; success is not always immediate or straightforward, but with persistence, the right guidance, and a clear sense of purpose, it is always within reach.
