Mark Matu Kimani, a Kenyan-born father, grandfather, and lifelong learner, passed away on February 8, 2026, in Guthrie, Oklahoma. He was 48.
Born on January 30, 1978, in Nairobi, Mark’s life unfolded as a paradox—marked by warmth and generosity, intellectual curiosity and quiet introspection, joy and personal struggle. To those who knew him, he was a thoughtful listener with a kind spirit and a deep love for family, culture, and discovery.
A Life Rooted in Family
Family stood at the center of Mark’s world. He shared nearly three decades with his partner, Meredith, whom he met in 1998. Together, they built a life grounded in shared history, commitment, and enduring connection.
Mark was a devoted father of four and a proud grandfather of eight. He is survived by his mother, Lucy Muthoni Kimani, and his brother, Eric Kimani, both of Kenya; and his children Alfredo Devon Christian Tapia, Isabella Gabrielle (Tapia) Ramirez, Alyssa Jenae Kimani, and Eric Kariuki Kimani.
Through his son Alfredo and daughter-in-law Tiffany, Mark welcomed five grandchildren: Rebecca Denise Tapia, Victoria Jo Renee Tapia, Alfredo Dewayne Christian Tapia, Damien Gabriel Tapia, and Theodore Wyatt Louis Tapia. His daughter Isabella and son-in-law Josh blessed him with Alexander Spencer Ramirez and Sofia Mary-Ann Ramirez. His youngest daughter Alyssa gave him Markel Jason Kimani, carrying his namesake into the future.
He was preceded in death by his wife Meredith Kimani; his father Edward Kimani Kariuki; and his brother-in-law Adam Hipshire.
Curiosity, Craft, and the Joy of Learning
Mark’s analytical mind showed in everything he loved to do. He earned a private pilot’s license from the Crabtree School of Aeronautics and an Associate of Science degree from ITT Technical Institute. Whether working on cars, tinkering with computers, flying drones, or exploring how things worked, Mark found joy in understanding the mechanics of the world around him.
Music—especially reggae—was the rhythm of his soul. It was a constant companion, matched only by the love he carried for his family.
A Legacy Held with Care
Those closest to Mark remember a deep thinker with a gentle presence—someone who listened carefully and loved fully. His life reflected the power of connection, the importance of family, and the thrill of discovery.
Like all lives, Mark’s journey included both meaningful joys and personal struggles. His legacy is complex and tenderly held by those who loved him. While the past cannot be changed, what remains true is the kindness he showed, the love he gave, and the compassion he inspired.
As family and friends mourn his passing, they also honor his humanity—acknowledging the scars he carried while choosing to remember the light he brought into the lives he touched.
