A 22-year-old Kenyan national, Allan Kiplimo, has been formally charged with the murder of fellow Kenyan Caleb Leriano, a 24-year-old chef whose death has shocked the Kenyan community in Australia and abroad.
Authorities in South Australia confirmed that Kiplimo appeared before the Adelaide Magistrates Court on March 16, 2026, following his extradition from Western Australia. The case has now been adjourned for 12 months due to the complexity of the investigation.
Caleb Leriano Found With Fatal Injuries in Crashed BMW
The tragic incident occurred in the early hours of Wednesday, March 11, 2026, in Morphett Vale, a suburb located south of Adelaide.
Emergency responders were initially called to the scene after reports that a BMW sedan had crashed into a power pole. When police arrived, they discovered Caleb Leriano inside the vehicle with life-threatening injuries.
At first, authorities believed the injuries were the result of the crash. However, forensic investigators later determined that Leriano had been assaulted before the collision, indicating that the crash was not the primary cause of his injuries.
The discovery quickly transformed what appeared to be a traffic accident into a major homicide investigation.
Police Believe Victim Was Lured to Meeting Before Attack
According to investigators, Leriano is believed to have driven to the nearby Sapphire Reserve area for a planned meeting shortly before the incident.
Detectives suspect that the fatal assault occurred during or after that meeting, though the exact circumstances remain under investigation.
Authorities have not yet released details about the possible motive behind the alleged attack.
Alan Kiplimo Arrested After Nationwide Manhunt
Following the incident, police launched a nationwide manhunt to locate the suspect.
On Friday, March 13, 2026, detectives arrested Allan Kiplimo in Brabham, a suburb of Perth in Western Australia. The arrest was carried out by officers from the Western Australia Police homicide squad.
Kiplimo was later extradited to South Australia on Monday, March 16, where he was escorted to Adelaide under police custody.
He appeared in the Adelaide Magistrates Court the same day, where prosecutors formally charged him with murder.
Complex Investigation Involving Digital Evidence
South Australia Police stated that the case is highly complex and involves significant digital forensic analysis.
Investigators are currently seeking electronic evidence from major technology platforms, including Google and Snapchat, which may contain critical communications linked to the case.
Authorities are also reviewing:
- CCTV footage from the Morphett Vale area
- Mobile phone records
- Swahili-language digital communications
- Location and messaging data
Police say analyzing this evidence will require extensive time, which contributed to the 12-month adjournment granted by the court.
Suspect Remains in Custody
During the court appearance, Kiplimo did not apply for bail and remains in custody.
The case will return to court in September 2026 for a status update, as investigators continue gathering and reviewing evidence.
Kenyan Community Reacts to Tragic Case
The death of Caleb Leriano has deeply affected members of the Kenyan diaspora community in Australia, particularly in Adelaide, where Leriano had been working as a chef.
Community members have expressed shock and sadness over the tragedy, with many calling for justice and support for the victim’s family during this difficult time.
As the investigation continues, authorities have urged anyone with information related to the case to come forward.
