The Kenyan diaspora community in the United States is mourning the passing of beloved pharmacist and community matriarch, Dr. Mary Gitau, affectionately known to many as Mama Njeri and Gatheru. Dr. Gitau, formerly of Baltimore, Maryland, passed away on May 8, 2026, after a courageous battle with liver cancer.
Her death has left a deep void among family, friends, and the Kenyan community both in the United States and Kenya, where she remained actively connected even after relocating back home in 2020.
A Life of Service and Compassion
Dr. Mary Gitau was widely respected for her years of dedicated service as a pharmacist in the Baltimore area. Known for her kindness, professionalism, and unwavering commitment to helping others, she touched countless lives throughout her career.
She was the beloved wife of the late Dr. Michie Gitau and a loving mother to Njeri, the late Papa, and Gatheru. She was also a cherished sister to Pastor Patrick Kibui and Rose Kibui of Baltimore, among other siblings and relatives.
Members of the Kenyan diaspora community remember her as a compassionate woman of faith who consistently supported community members during times of joy and hardship.
Illness and Passing
In March 2026, Dr. Mary Gitau fell ill and was diagnosed with liver cancer. Despite medical efforts and support from loved ones, she succumbed to the illness on May 8, 2026, and went to be with the Lord.
