The Kenyan diaspora community in Southern Africa recently came together for a powerful conversation on identity, unity, and community building during the Kenyan Diaspora Dialogue held in Gaborone, Botswana.
The event, hosted by the Kenya Youth Diaspora Association on May 3, 2026, at the River Ridge Guest House, attracted more than 60 young professionals, students, and community leaders from Kenya, Botswana, Zimbabwe, and Zambia.
The dialogue was strongly supported by Sabdiyo Dido Bashuna, Kenya’s High Commissioner to Botswana, who emphasized the importance of preserving African identity while living abroad.
Kenyan Diaspora Youth Encouraged to Preserve Their Identity
In her keynote address, Ambassador Sabdiyo Dido Bashuna challenged young Africans in the diaspora to remain proud of their heritage and culture despite the pressures of adapting to foreign environments.
She warned against losing cultural roots in the process of assimilation and urged the youth to remain connected to their languages, values, traditions, and communities.
According to participants, the ambassador’s message resonated strongly with many young professionals navigating life away from home while trying to balance integration and cultural preservation.
The event highlighted growing conversations within the Kenyan diaspora about identity, belonging, and maintaining strong African values while living in multicultural societies.
KEYDA Pushes for Early Diaspora Community Building
The discussions also focused on the importance of creating support systems for Africans immediately after relocating abroad.
KEYDA Founding Chairperson Victor Gitonga shared personal experiences of growing up in Botswana and explained why intentional community building is critical for diaspora success.
He emphasized that many Africans moving abroad often struggle with loneliness, lack of information, settlement challenges, and limited social networks during their first months in a new country.
According to Gitonga, diaspora organizations play a key role in helping newcomers settle, connect professionally, and access emotional and social support.
The dialogue encouraged Kenyan students and young professionals to actively participate in diaspora networks and community organizations to help strengthen unity and collaboration across borders.
Pan-African Unity Highlighted During Botswana Dialogue
One of the major themes of the gathering was Pan-African unity and regional cooperation among Africans living in the Southern African Development Community (SADC) region.
The event intentionally included voices from neighboring countries such as Zimbabwe and Zambia, creating broader discussions around migration experiences, youth empowerment, and African solidarity abroad.
Panel discussions explored how young Africans can collaborate across borders in areas such as entrepreneurship, education, mentorship, professional networking, and cultural exchange.
Participants also discussed the importance of supporting one another in foreign countries while building stronger African communities abroad.
Growing Importance of Diaspora Engagement
The Kenyan Diaspora Dialogue in Botswana reflects a growing trend of diaspora-led initiatives aimed at strengthening identity, networking, and economic empowerment among Africans abroad.
