Nominations for the 2011 African Awards Begin

Nominations for this year’s African Awards are now underway and will continue through July 30 at AfricanAwards.com .

The African Awards, now in their third year, are presented by Mshale Newspaper and are its signature event designed to honor excellence and community service in the African immigrant community in the United States.

The climax will be the African Awards Gala on Saturday, October 8 in Saint Paul, Minnesota where the community will pay homage to the winners at the black-tie event.

Award categories increased to 8!

Tickets to the Awards Gala are also on sale at AfricanAwards.com   and the gala will for the first time this year feature African food.

2011 African Movie Academy Awards

The 2011 African Movie Academy Awards (AMAA) nominations were officially announced in February 2011, with the ceremony held in April of the same year. The nominations highlighted a diverse range of African films and talents, showcasing the continent’s rich cinematic landscape.​

Key Highlights from the 2011 AMAA Nominations

Best Film: The nominees included Viva Riva! (Congo), Sinking Sands (Ghana), Aramotu (Nigeria), Soul Boy (Kenya), Hopeville (South Africa), and A Small Town Called Descent (South Africa) .​

Best Director: Nominations were given to Hawa Essuman for Soul Boy, Oliver Hermanus for Shirley Adams, Djo Tunda Wa Munga for Viva Riva, Niji Akanni for Aramotu, Jahmil X.T. Qubeka for A Small Town Called Descent, and Leila Djansi for Sinking Sands .​

Best Actress in a Leading Role: Nominees included Idiat Shobande (Aramotu), Omoni Oboli (Anchor Baby), Manie Malone (Viva Riva), Ama K. Abebrese (Sinking Sands), Denise Newman (Shirley Adams), and Genevieve Nnaji (Tango With Me) .

Best Actor in a Leading Role: The nominees were Themba Ndaba (Hopeville), Patsha Bay (Viva Riva), Jimmy Jean-Louis (Sinking Sands), Ekow Blankson (Checkmate), and Antar Laniyan (Yemoja) .

Best Film in African Language: Films nominated included Aramotu (Nigeria), Izulu Lami (South Africa), Soul Boy (Kenya), Suwi (Zambia), and Fishing the Little Stone (Uganda) .​

These nominations reflected the growing recognition and appreciation of African cinema on the global stage, highlighting the diverse storytelling and talent emerging from the continent.
