More Details
In 2013, the Kenyan diaspora in Baltimore, Maryland, joined the global celebration of Kenya’s historic general election held on March 4.
This election marked a significant milestone as it was the first under Kenya’s new constitution and the first to be managed by the reformed Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).
With a voter turnout exceeding 85%, the election was largely peaceful and free from the violence that marred the 2007 elections. International observers, including the Carter Center and the U.S. government, commended the process for its transparency and the peaceful adjudication of disputes.
In Baltimore, the Kenyan community, along with other African immigrants, actively participated in civic events and celebrations.
These gatherings not only celebrated the democratic achievement but also fostered unity and pride among Kenyans abroad.
The city’s diverse African population, which includes significant numbers of Kenyans, Nigerians, and Ethiopians, often comes together for cultural events such as FestAfrica, highlighting the rich tapestry of African cultures in the region.
The 2013 election was a testament to Kenya’s commitment to democratic principles and the resilience of its institutions. For the Kenyan diaspora in Baltimore, it was a moment of pride and a reaffirmation of their connection to their homeland’s progress.
