NAIROBI, KENYA: President Uhuru Kenyatta has appointed Attorney General Githu Muigai as acting Cabinet Secretary Interior and Coordination of National Government pending vetting of Joseph Ole who is the nominee for the post.

Ole Lenku who is yet to be vetted, was nominated by President Uhuru alongside Kazungu Kambi who was selected Cabinet Secretary Labour, Social Security and Services.

“This is by authority conferred on the President by articles 132(3(C) and 156 (C) of the constitution. Prof Githu will however continue undertaking his duties as Attorney General,”  a statement released by PPS stated.

Mr Ole Lenku is a career hotelier, having served the industry since 1996.

He holds a Bachelor of Commerce, majoring in marketing from the University of Nairobi and a Diploma in Hotel Management from the Kenya Utalii College.

He also has MBA in strategic management. He is a former manager at Kilaguni Lodge and worked with the Serena Hotels in Tanzania.

In 2013, President Uhuru Kenyatta appointed Professor Githu Muigai, then serving as Kenya’s Attorney General, as the Acting Cabinet Secretary for the Ministry of Interior and Coordination of National Government.

This appointment was made pending the vetting of Joseph Ole Lenku, who had been nominated for the position. The decision was in accordance with Articles 132(3)(c) and 156(c) of the Kenyan Constitution.

Despite taking on the additional role, Professor Muigai continued to fulfill his duties as Attorney General during this interim period.

Professor Muigai is a distinguished Kenyan lawyer and academic. He served as Attorney General from 2011 until his resignation in 2018.

He holds a bachelor’s degree in law from the University of Nairobi, a master’s degree in international law from Columbia University, and a Ph.D. in law from the University of Nairobi.

Beyond his legal career, he has been involved in international human rights work, notably serving as the United Nations Special Rapporteur on contemporary forms of racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia, and related intolerance.
