Cabinet okays building of 30,000 houses in Mavoko
The Cabinet has given the greenlight for the construction of 30,000 houses in Mavoko, Machakos County.
It approved a plan by the National Social Security Fund (NSSF) to build the housing units on its 1,000-acre farm in Mavoko.
“This is a Public Private Partnership (PPP) arrangement. A strategic partner will be identified to construct houses and build other amenities.
“The project is key to Government delivering on its pledge to reduce the acute shortage of houses in our nation’s capital in line with the Jubilee manifesto,” said a cabinet brief sent to newsrooms Thursday.
President Kenyatta chaired the Cabinet meeting at State House, Nairobi.
On revenue collection at the Fund, Cabinet authorised the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) to collect members’ contributions on behalf of NSSF. The Cabinet noted that the move would boost revenues from the present Sh600 million to Sh12 billion.
It also directed all other State Corporations and agencies that levy charges on their services to partner with KRA in the collection of such levies.
The Cabinet noted that pregnant mothers were opting for delivery in public hospitals since the roll out of free maternal healthcare.
“Preference for delivery in public hospitals has almost doubled to 80 per cent from 44 per cent previously. So far, there has been no deaths reported arising from delivery complications,” read the brief.
The Cabinet directed the National Treasury to ensure funds earmarked for the programme were released on time.
It also approved the recruitment of 40 health workers per constituency (including 30 nurses) to accelerate service delivery.nation.co.ke
