A story is given about how a group of scientists decided that human beings could do without God. One of them looked up to God and told him that they no longer needed him and that they had enough wisdom to clone people and do many miraculous things. God listened patiently and then told them they would have a man making contest. In fact the competition would be done just like God had done it at the beginning with Adam.
The scientists agreed with this deal. One of them then bent down and picked up a handful of dirt but God looked at him and told him that he would have to make his own dirt to create man! In Jeremiahโs day, the Israelites were living as if they no longer needed the Lord. In fact they had entrusted themselves to other gods even though these gods could not respond to their needs.
Are we guilty of living as if we donโt need God? We may know him as our Savior but we could be worshiping the idol of our own wisdom, self-sufficiency or self-dependence. The Lord could be saying to us today itโs time we went back to our first love, loving God wholly. Remember, the idol of self is a sorry substitute for God because he is the Great and Almighty God, creator of Heaven and Earth, the Lord we are to worship with all our heart, soul and mind.
“My people have committed two sins: They have forsaken me, the spring of Living water, and have dug their own cisterns, broken cisterns that cannot hold water.”
Jeremiah 2:13
