HOW to kiss, Raila Odinga and devolution are some of the most intriguing topics for Kenyans online, a Google top searches for 2013 report released yesterday has revealed.
The annual report which tracks topics and issues internet users seek via the google search engine shows that people are more concerned about how to kiss than how to pray in the ranking for ‘how to’ category of searches.
Kissing has displaced abortion which topped this category last year but is still a hot topic as it was ranked third.
Ovulation and stress are the top two trending topics on the ‘what is’ searches in the health category reflecting the high interest in reproductive health.
Google said the survey offers “a look at 2013 through the collective eyes of the world on the web, offering a unique perspective on the year’s major events and hottest trends based on searches conducted in Kenya.”
And as the country embarks on its first year in a devolved system of government, many people in Kenya searched for the meaning of devolution which was ranked first in the ‘what is’ political realm category.
“Many Kenyans also searched on devolution, an indication that they want to learn more about the new system of governance. Issues on policy, democracy, revolution, obamacare, security, nomination, Biometric Voter Registration, gubernatorial and county were also searched under the politics category,” said Google.
The Star website was number five in the top searched news sites beating Nairobi Wire, BBC News, Standard Digital, Nation.co.ke and Citizen TV which were sixth, seventh, eighth, ninth and tenth respectively.
In the category of the most searched personalities, Raila Odinga aroused a lot of interest to be the top trending person, followed by President Uhuru Kenyatta with Radio Africa Group’s Caroline Mutoko ranking third.
Others were William Ruto at number four, followed by comedian Dan Ndambuki also known as Churchill, Nairobi senator Mike Sonko, gospel musician Emmy Kosgei, the late Mutula Kilonzo, Nairobi women’s representative Racheal Shebesh and Governor Evans Kidero came in at number ten.
The IEBC, the Westgate attack and KCSE results for 2012 were the top three trending events while Kidero’s alleged slapping of Shebesh was eighth in this category.
Soap operas were popular search topics under the TV shows category. The top five shows were Citizen TV Live, NTV Live, Jicho Pevu, Abyss of Passion and Amor Bravio.
“Kenyans love for telenovelas was evident in the trending search for TV programmes like Abyss of Passion, Amor Bravio, Punar Vivah and La Fuerza del Destino. Local productions also generated interest for google searches with Tujuane and Jicho Pevu being among the top trending TV programmes,” said Google.
