A party affiliated to political veteran and multiparty democracy leader Kenneth Matiba has criticised Cord for declaring July 7 a public holiday. Mzalendo Saba Saba party, whose patron is Matiba, accused Cord of planning to overthrow the government on a day that is meant to celebrate heroes who fought for the democracy the country is enjoying.
Led by their Chairman George Gachugu, the party officials who held a press conference at a Murang’a hotel yesterday said Cord wants to destabilise Kenya and cause tension. “Cord leader Raila Odinga should not declare Saba Saba a national holiday and as a party affiliated to Matiba we condemn his actions,” he said. The official said Kenyans should ignore the calls for demonstrations and shun politicians who want power “through the back door”.
