Devotion:Have These Ugly Pests Invaded You?

Yesterday we learned that a tithe is a holy thing to the Lord. We further saw from the story of Achan in Joshua 7 that it is a very dangerous thing to mess with anything holy to the Lord. In verse 9 of today’s passage, the Lord accuses Israel of robbing from Him the tithes. Then He goes ahead and pronounces a punishment for this act against Him.

You are under a curse—your whole nation—because you are robbing me. Malachi 3:9

No specifics are given concerning this curse. But after giving a challenge for everyone to give their tithes, the Lord states what would happen to those who would bring their tithes to His house.

I will prevent pests from devouring your crops, and the vines in your fields will not drop their fruit before it is ripe,” says the Lord Almighty. “Then all the nations will call you blessed, for yours will be a delightful land,” says the Lord Almighty. Malachi 3:11-12

Now this is a positive promise for those who are faithful in giving their tithes to God. But how about if we look at this passage from the point of view of those who fail to give their tithes? Three things will happen to them: first, pests will invade their crops; secondly, vines in the farm will drop their fruit before it is ripe; and finally the nations will call them cursed.

This clearly shows that God protects the properties of people who faithfully give their tithes. On the other hand, pests will invade the crops of those who are not giving God their tithes.

This is why I ask, “Have These Ugly Pests Invaded You”?

1.      First we must identify these pests. Farmers will have no problem understanding the damage that can be caused by different kinds of pests. This is why farmers use different kinds of insecticides to kill these pests. But the majority of people in the western world live in cities. So the threat of pests, we know, is almost non-existent since they do not live on farms. So what kind of pests will invade them? Here are a few contemporary pests that will affect those who live in cities and towns.

a.      Loss of a job

b.      A demotion at work resulting in less pay

c.      Speeding tickets or other road violations

d.      Sicknesses

e.      Breakdown of cars

f.       Breakdown in the house that demands too much repair money

g.      What else can you add to this list?

2.      I believe there are many Christians who are suffering from these pests. But because they have not been able to apply this text into today’s lifestyle, they are not able to identify the cause of their sufferings.

a.      Some buy cars but they continue breaking down or getting involved in accidents. They never seem to keep a good clean car for a long time.

b.      Some spend most of their money on hospital bills but they never stop to find why this happens year after year.

c.      Others deal with crisis after crisis that seems to be never ending. If it is not their immediate family, then it is extended families.

3.      Examine your life and see if you are suffering from the invasion of these ugly pests. Remember, pests come in different versions.

4.      What else have you learned from today’s passage?

I believe there are many Christians who

Are suffering from these modern pests.

But because they have not been able

To apply this text into today’s

Lifestyle, they are not able

To identify the cause of

Their sufferings.

This begs the question
