A police officer who was part of three-man gang was Saturday noon shot dead in a botched robbery in Kisumu.
Another man was also killed alongside the officer in Kisumu’s Manyatta A estate after police trailed the three who had just executed two robberies within the city’s central business district.
Regional coordinator Charles Narangwi said the two were killed after they tried to shoot at police who had pursued them to their hide-out following a tip-off by a member of the public.
Mr Narangwi told the press in a briefing that the slain man had police identification documents whose details matched those on his national ID.
The officer attached to a Koibatek police station in Baringo County, was off-duty on permission to attend a funeral, according to a document found on him.
“The documents obtained from the scene indicate that he is a police officer, but we will investigate further to establish the truth,” he said.
One firearm, a styer, and five rounds of ammunition, and an assortment of police uniform were recovered in the house where the two were slain, the police boss said
VICTIMS IDENTIFIED SUSPECTS
The regional boss said the victims of the Saturday morning robberies had identified the two.
Two men approached the Tuffoam Matresses employees who had just collected money from cashiers and robbed them of Sh40, 000 cash at gunpoint,” he said.
The two, he said had, been linked to another robbery in the city, along Oginga Odinga street, in which they robbed another man of Sh400,000 minutes after the first one.
The driver is at large, having dropped the two and escaping in an attempt to lose the police. A woman associated with one of the slain men is also at large.
Residents said they suspected the three were connected to a series of attacks and robberies around the estate over the past month.
