President Uhuru Kenyatta and Deputy President William Ruto visited Bomet Governor Isaac Ruto following the tragic death of his daughter, Emily Chepng’etich Ruto, in 2015. Emily, a 25-year-old national women’s cricket team captain, passed away at Aga Khan Hospital in Nairobi after a short illness.
In a show of solidarity, political leaders from across the spectrum gathered at Governor Ruto’s home in Chepalungu to mourn her passing. Deputy President Ruto represented President Kenyatta at the funeral, which was attended by at least 30 governors, six senators, and more than 20 Members of Parliament.
The leaders unanimously agreed to establish a cancer treatment center in Bomet in honor of Emily. At least KSh 8 million, originally set aside for her treatment, was allocated for the construction of the facility. Additionally, President Kenyatta and Deputy President Ruto pledged an extra KSh 2 million to ensure the project’s completion.
The funeral also served as a platform for leaders to call for improved healthcare infrastructure, with Deputy President Ruto highlighting the government’s commitment to constructing at least two level-five hospitals in each of Kenya’s 47 counties.
Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga emphasized the importance of early cancer detection and the need for similar treatment centers across the country.
Governor Isaac Ruto and his wife, Esther, expressed their gratitude for the national support during this difficult time and honored their daughter’s legacy. Cricket Kenya officials also pledged to develop the sport in the region, including donating an astro-turf for local use.
This collective response underscored the unity and compassion of Kenya’s leadership in the face of personal tragedy.
