The viewing of the body of Homa Bay senator Otieno Kajwang at the Kenyatta Sports Grounds in Kisumu did not take place on Thursday because of the mammoth crowd that arrived ahead of schedule.
The mourners gathered at 8am to view the body that arrived at 10am.
Homa Bay governor Cyprian Awiti, who is the chairman of the county funeral committee, said Kajwang’s body will now be taken to Homa Bay High School for viewing by residents before proceeding to Wahondo village in Mbita.
This follows a botched viewing in Nairobi on Wednesday during which rowdy youths disrupted prayers and a viewing forcing the body’s move from Uhuru Park.
The youths also destroyed the stand on which Kajwang’s coffin had been placed.
The charismatic Kajwang died on November 18 after complaining of chest pains and laboured breathing while at the residence of his second wife in Nairobiโs South C area.
He was rushed to Mater hospital but doctors pronounced him dead two hours later.
A postmortem conducted by government pathologist Johanes Oduo, though inconclusive, revealed that the senator succumbed to a heart attack. Samples were flown to Pretoria, South Africa to ascertain the cause of his death.
Leaders condoling with the family described the late Kajwangโ as an accomplished debater, a charismatic leader and a patriot.
