Leaders join Kenya in marking 51 years of Independence

Presidents John Mahama of Ghana, Rwandaโ€™s Paul Kagame, and Yoweri Museveni of Uganda are among invited guests attending todayโ€™s Jamhuri Day Celebrations at Nyayo National Stadium in Nairobi.

The three arrived at around 11am ahead of host President Uhuru Kenyatta who arrived at 11.30 am. Deputy President William Ruto and Amina Mohammed received Kagame, Museveni and Mahama.

Other key leaders attending the celebration include Cord leaders Raila Odinga, Moses Wetangula, and National Assembly Speaker Justin Muturi.

Thousands of Kenyans braved the morning chill to mark the most important holiday in the country as they eagerly waited to hear President Uhuru Kenyatta address several issues among them the controversial security amendment bill.

In an interview with KTN, Kenya’s envoy to UN Habitat Sam Ongeri said he expects the President to address insecurity, unemployment and economy matters in his speech

โ€œThe president will touch key issues in the jubilee manifesto like employment and infrastructural development. Unity among Kenyans will also take center stage,โ€ he said.
