The people of Judah felt that there was no distinction between the righteous and those who did not fear the Lord. These kinds of thoughts led them to begin giving false views of God’s ways of operation. And God responded to this accusation against Him.

“You have spoken arrogantly against me,” says the Lord.

“Yet you ask, ‘What have we said against you?’

“You have said, ‘It is futile to serve God. What do we gain by carrying out his requirements and going about like mourners before the Lord Almighty? But now we call the arrogant blessed. Certainly evildoers prosper, and even when they put God to the test, they get away with it.’” Malachi 3:13-15

Then God gave this answer to them.

On the day when I act,” says the Lord Almighty, “they will be my treasured possession. I will spare them, just as a father has compassion and spares his son who serves him. Malachi 3:17

Notice how many unconditional promises God will do for the righteous! First they will be His treasured possessions, then, He will spare them. This is re-assuring for the faithful who might have actually been tempted to adopt this view of God. But God did not stop there; He gave even more reassuring news about the righteous.

And you will again see the distinction between the righteous and the wicked, between those who serve God and those who do not.Malachi 3:18

God makes it clear that there will be a distinction between the righteous and the wicked. But He goes further to say there will be a distinction between those who serve the Lord and those who do not.

It is possible that God is also describing two groups of the righteous here?  Those who serve the Lord and those who do not!  Now that makes for an interesting discussion.

But one thing is definitely clear; there is a distinction between the righteous and the wicked.

1.       As a Christian, have you ever been tempted to think that there is no distinction between you and unbelievers? If yes, what might have caused such thoughts to cross your mind?

a.    Were you angry that God had not answered your prayers?

b.    Is it because the wicked were prospering while believers were struggling?

c.    Was this a time that you doubted the love of God in your life?

2.       I believe most believers are aware that in the end, there will be a clear distinction between believers and unbelievers. We know that their eternal destinies are different. This distinction is beautifully illustrated by the story told by our Lord Jesus Christ about the rich man and Lazarus the poor man. Read this story again to refresh your mind. Luke 16:19-31

3.       What are some of the present distinctions between believers and non-believers? Can you name a few? Add to the following list.

a.     The Holy Spirit dwells in believers

b.    They are the light of the world

c.    Every believer has at least one Angel guarding him or her.

d.    What else can you add to this list?

4.       Will there be any distinction between believers who are serving the Lord and those who are not serving Him? If so, what is it?

And you will again see the distinction

Between the righteous and the wicked,

Between those who serve God

And those who do not.

Malachi 3:18
