Retired Chief of Defence Forces Julius karangi handed over to his successor Lieutenant-General Samson Mwathethe on Monday.
The ceremony took place at the Department of Defence headquarters in Hurlingham, Nairobi.
President Uhuru Kenyatta appointed Mwathethe on April 18, following Karangi’s retirement after 42 years of service.
Prior to his appointment, the 57-year-old served as Vice-Chief of Defence Forces.
He has also served as Kenya Navy Commander, Deputy Kenya Navy Commander, Base Commander and Fleet Commander.
Mwathethe further served with the United Nations as a military observer in Kuwait/ Iraq and Yugoslavia from 1992 to 1992.
His decorations include Distinguished Conduct Order (DCO) and Moran of the Burning Spear (MBS).
Mwathethe has his work cut out as he seeks to curb al Shabaab attacks across the country.
