Anxiety at Kenyan embassies after ministry sacks old staff

Kenya foreign missions have been hit by anxiety after the Foreign Affairs ministry sacked all staff employed during the previous regime, the People Daily has established.

Documents in our possession show how the exercise has been undertaken in the Los Angeles Consulate where all the old staff including a relative to former President Mwai Kibaki’s wife, Lucy, an administrative assistant, has been affected.

While the ministry has maintained it is a normal restructuring exercise, complaint letters filed to Nairobi by the affected employees show the purge targeted old staff. Staff members are now living in fear not knowing the next cause of action as the ministry maintains that the restructuring exercise will continue in all the missions and embassies.

In Los Angeles, all the senior staff members employed by former Consul General Wenwa Odinga have been sent packing. It is alleged foreigners have been hired with better terms.

The affected members of staff have written numerous letters to Foreign Affairs Cabinet secretary Amina Mohamed and Kenyan Ambassador to the US Njeru Githae, but no response has been forthcoming.
