A man attempted suicide after his wife refused to cook him fish in Kanduyi constituency, Bungoma county, on Wednesday evening.

Ibrahim Makokha’s wife declined to prepare the fish saying she was tired, recounted neighbour Esther Nekesa.

Nekesa said Makokha then picked up a quarrel which ended in a fight forcing the woman to run away.

She said neighbours advised the man to return to the house and rest, only to learn later that he had attempted to kill himself.

Makokha reportedly locked himself up in the house in Mayanja and set it ablaze, saying his wife had refused to prepare the fish he bought.

Neighbours who noticed the house burning broke into it and pulled him out before the roof collapsed.

“We heard a loud noise before noticing the house was on fire. We found him lying on a mattress which was burning,” Nekesa said.

Makokha was taken to Bungoma County Referral Hospital with burns to 60 per cent of his body.

Nurses at the hospital said his buttocks and head were most affected and that it will be a while before he recovers.

Area OCPD David Kirui said Makokha has committed a crime and will be arraigned in court as soon as he is discharged from hospital.

He asked couples to resolve domestic matters amicably.
