Kakamega County Deputy Governor Philip Museve Kutima spent Friday night in a police cell after he was arrested in Nairobi during a drunk driving crackdown conducted by the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA).
Kutima was among 43 motorists arrested along the busy Ruiru-Eastern Bypass during a late-night alcoblow operation targeting reckless and intoxicated drivers. Authorities say the intensified crackdown is part of ongoing efforts to reduce the alarming number of road accidents across Kenya.
According to police reports, the deputy governor was detained at Ruiru Police Station after allegedly failing the alcohol breathalyzer test. He was later released on Saturday morning after paying a cash bail of KSh 20,000 and is expected to appear in court on Monday.
NTSA Intensifies Alcoblow Operations
The NTSA has recently stepped up random alcoblow checks on major highways and urban roads following a rise in deadly road accidents linked to drunk driving and reckless behavior.
Road safety officials say the campaign aims to restore discipline among motorists and prevent avoidable tragedies that continue to claim thousands of lives every year.
Data released by the roads agency revealed that by last Thursday alone:
- 509 pedestrians had died in road accidents
- 465 people sustained serious injuries
- 174 others suffered minor injuries
Kenya continues to lose nearly 3,000 people annually through road crashes, with reckless driving, speeding, drunk driving, and careless pedestrian behavior cited as the leading causes.
Growing Concern Over Road Safety in Kenya
The arrest of a senior county official has sparked conversations online about accountability and responsible leadership. Many Kenyans on social media argued that public officials should set an example by obeying traffic laws and avoiding behavior that endangers lives.
The NTSA has maintained that no one is above the law and warned motorists against driving under the influence of alcohol, especially during weekends and holidays when accidents tend to increase.
Road safety experts have also urged the government to strengthen enforcement measures, expand public awareness campaigns, and improve pedestrian safety infrastructure across the country.
