Sonko says some MPs plan to lock him out of politics
Nairobi Senator Mike Sonko yesterday accused some Jubilee MPs of planning to lock him out of city politics.Speaking to the Star on the phone, he termed the MPs “tribalists and lone rangers who have no support from residents”.
Sonko said he does not focus on a single tribe to win the Nairobi governor’s office. “Those planning to isolate me will not succeed,” he said.
Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has accused certain Members of Parliament (MPs) of conspiring to exclude him from Nairobi’s political scene.
In a 2016 interview, Sonko alleged that some Jubilee legislators were attempting to sideline him, labeling them as tribalistic and claiming they lacked genuine support from Nairobi’s residents.
He asserted, “Those planning to isolate me will not succeed because I have the support of Nairobi residents unlike them.”
This accusation aligns with Sonko’s history of political challenges. In December 2020, he was impeached on charges including misuse of office and gross misconduct.
Despite appeals, the Supreme Court upheld his removal, stating that his impeachment adhered to constitutional and legal standards, effectively barring him from holding public office.
Following his impeachment, Sonko sought to continue his political journey by vying for the Mombasa gubernatorial seat in the August 2022 elections.
However, the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) disqualified him, citing his impeachment as a disqualifying factor under Article 75(3) of the Constitution.
These events highlight the complexities surrounding Sonko’s political aspirations and the challenges he faces within Kenya’s political landscape.
