Peace Building in Kibera: Huthead’s Journey

PeaceTones, recognizes that musicians play a powerful role in local community building, which in turn contributes to global peacemaking. Emmanuel Odhiambo, aka Huthead, is a talented musician from Kibera, the largest slum in Kenya.

His music is inspired by reggae and hip-hop and paints a portrait of life in his community as it is and as it could be with his socially conscious lyricism. Emmanuel has seen first hand what war and violence do to society- the death, division, and regression it has brought to Kenya.

PeaceTones is a nonprofit initiative that recognizes the profound impact musicians can have on community building and global peacemaking. By empowering artists from marginalized regions, PeaceTones fosters unity, amplifies voices of resilience, and promotes social justice through music.

Empowering Musicians for Social Change

PeaceTones provides training in legal rights, marketing, and music distribution to artists in communities with limited access to resources.

This empowerment enables musicians to protect their intellectual property, reach global audiences, and reinvest earnings into local development projects.

For instance, in Nairobi’s Kibera slum, PeaceTones conducted workshops on musicians’ rights and organized peace concerts to promote positive messages and unity among diverse communities.

Global Projects Promoting Peace and Unity

Through projects like The World United in Song, PeaceTones collaborates with artists from refugee camps, post-conflict regions, and marginalized areas to share their stories through music.

This initiative highlights the universal desire for peace and the power of music to transcend borders and foster understanding.

Impact and Recognition

The PeaceTones Initiative has produced albums in Brazil, Haiti, and Sierra Leone, raising awareness about the economic value of intellectual property rights and the importance of supporting local artists.

Notably, Haitian artist Wanito gained international recognition through the Haiti Sings project, becoming a prominent voice in Haiti’s post-earthquake reconstruction efforts.

By empowering musicians and amplifying their voices, PeaceTones contributes to building stronger communities and advancing global peacemaking efforts.
