The body of veteran politician William Ole Ntimama has arrived in Narok for burial later in the morning.

The cortege arrived at 9am. Family members, burial committee members and dignitaries held a brief prayer when the body was taken to his residence at Motonyi for a brief stopover before it was transferred to the burial site.

William ole Ntimama, a prominent Maasai leader and former Cabinet Minister in Kenya, was laid to rest on September 14, 2016, at his ancestral home in Motonyi Village, Narok County. His passing on September 1, 2016, at the age of 90 marked the end of a distinguished political career that spanned several decades and three presidential administrations.

Burial Ceremony and Cultural Significance

The burial ceremony was a significant event, with over 50,000 mourners in attendance. Narok County declared September 14 a public holiday to allow residents to participate in the proceedings .

In line with Maasai traditions, a special bull was slaughtered in a ritual performed by elders from the Ilnyangusi and Iseuri age groups, symbolizing the passing of a community elder.

The burial site was at the family’s graveyard, where Ntimama was interred beside his three deceased children. Only close family members and select government officials were permitted at the gravesite following the ceremony.

National and Political Leaders Pay Tribute

The ceremony was attended by numerous dignitaries, including President Uhuru Kenyatta, former President Daniel arap Moi, opposition leader Raila Odinga, and other political figures. In his eulogy, Ntimama’s son, Timothy Ntimama, described his father as a fearless leader who fought for the rights of the Maasai community and remained steadfast in his beliefs.

Cultural and Political Legacy

Ntimama’s legacy extends beyond his political achievements. In honor of his contributions, the Narok County Stadium was renamed Ole Ntimama Stadium in 2019. The government also committed to upgrading the facility to international standards by 2022.
