It has now emerged that President Uhuru Kenyatta’s visit to Western Kenya where he presided over Kibabii University’s inaugural graduation left locals utterly disappointed. The residents especially sugarcane farmers did not get what they expected.

Before President embarked on the trip, Jubilee allied MPs in the region had indicated that Kenyatta would be in the region on Thursday and Friday and locals hoped he would address their development concerns.

However, the Head of State’s itinerary for the two-day tour of Western was revised at the 11th hour, leading to the cancellation of numerous activities.

According to National Federation of Sugarcane Farmers Deputy Secretary General Simon Wesechere, sugarcane farmers were among groups eagerly waiting to meet the President and air their grievances.

“It is unfortunate that he (Uhuru) had to cancel most of the activities when farmers were prepared to engage him over their plight,” said Mr Wesechere.

It was expected that President would commission several roads during his tour, hold a meeting with youth at Kakamega State Lodge where he was scheduled to spend a night and commission mega water projects in Vihiga and Mumias.

Even so, Jubilee foot soldiers in the area led by Mumias East MP Benjamin Washiali, defended the President saying he had opted to return to the region later to commission projects and campaign for his re-election.

“The President shall have more time to look into issues of development when he tours next,” said Washiali.

After the graduation, the President visited Pan Paper factory to inspect rehabilitation of machines and assured he would return to the region on December 15 to switch on the Pan Paper Mills in Webuye and address other meetings.
