EU Election Observers Call for Peaceful Acceptance of Election Results in Kenya

The European Union Election Observation Mission (EU EOM) has called on Kenyan political leaders to maintain peace by accepting election outcomes or pursuing any disputes through the country’s legal system instead of inciting supporters.

The appeal came as the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) continued verifying and announcing election results, with international observers closely monitoring the electoral process.

For millions of Kenyans living abroad, the elections remain significant because political stability directly affects investment opportunities, remittances, family welfare, and confidence in Kenya’s democratic institutions.

EU Urges Leaders to Exercise Restraint

Speaking during a press briefing, Head of the EU Election Observation Mission Marietje Schaake urged candidates who may lose the election to concede peacefully where appropriate and, if dissatisfied, seek justice through constitutional mechanisms.

She emphasized that political leaders should avoid inflammatory remarks capable of provoking violence or increasing political tensions.

According to Schaake, any claims regarding election irregularities, including allegations of hacking, deserve proper investigation through the relevant institutions rather than being used to fuel unrest.

“Elections Should Never Be a Matter of Life or Death”

Reflecting on Kenya’s democratic journey, Schaake expressed hope that the country had learned important lessons from the violence witnessed after the 2007 General Election.

“Elections should never be an issue of life or death. They should not be, and I hope the lessons from the past continue to guide the country,” she said.

She encouraged all candidates and political parties to utilize the legal avenues provided under the Constitution if they wished to challenge any aspect of the election process.

According to the EU mission, confidence in democratic institutions is strengthened when electoral disputes are resolved through independent courts rather than violence or public confrontation.

Concern Over High Number of Spoilt Ballots

The EU observers also noted the unusually high number of spoiled ballots recorded during voting.

Schaake said the issue deserves careful examination to determine whether it resulted from voter education challenges, ballot design, or other factors affecting the electoral process.

She recommended that election stakeholders conduct a thorough review to improve future elections and reduce invalid votes.

East African Community Observers Back IEBC Process

The East African Community (EAC) Election Observer Mission also appealed to Kenyans to remain patient as the IEBC completed the verification and tallying of election results.

Speaking on behalf of the regional observer team, Head of Mission Edward Rugumayo commended the electoral commission for managing the voting process and urged all candidates to respect the final outcome.

Rugumayo said the observer mission had engaged IEBC officials, who assured them that the electoral technology system had not been compromised despite circulating allegations.

Based on the mission’s observations across polling stations, he stated that the elections were conducted in a manner that met accepted democratic standards and described the process as generally free and fair.

Why Kenya’s Elections Matter to the Diaspora

Kenya’s elections extend beyond its borders. More than 4 million Kenyans living abroad maintain close economic and family ties with the country through billions of shillings in annual remittances, making political stability a major concern for diaspora communities.

Peaceful elections help:

  • Protect investments made by Kenyans abroad.
  • Sustain investor confidence in Kenya’s economy.
  • Safeguard tourism and business activity.
  • Ensure uninterrupted support for families receiving remittances.
  • Strengthen Kenya’s international reputation as a stable democracy.

Many diaspora organizations have consistently encouraged peaceful coexistence during election periods, recognizing that instability at home can have lasting effects on Kenyans living overseas.

Expert Perspective

Political governance experts have long maintained that credible elections depend not only on transparent voting but also on how political leaders respond to the results.

Respect for constitutional institutions, independent courts, and electoral bodies remains essential in strengthening democratic governance and preventing post-election conflict.

Conclusion

As Kenya concludes its electoral process, both the European Union and the East African Community observer missions have delivered a unified message: maintain peace, respect the law, and resolve disputes through established judicial channels.

For Kenyans both at home and across the diaspora, peaceful elections remain critical to preserving national unity, protecting economic progress, and reinforcing confidence in Kenya’s democratic future.
