Raila Odinga kicks off his US tour ,to address Congress
National super alliance (NASA) principal Raila Odinga set foot in the US on Wednesday morning, to kick off a series of important meetings with members of the congress, in a bid to push for electoral reforms in light of the political crisis in Kenya.
Raila is expected to deliver a keynote address on “Overcoming Kenya’s political crisis and advancing democracy, rule of law and stability”.
The crucial meeting will take place today at the headquarters of Center for Strategic and International Studies between 9:30am–11am DC time.
Some US Lawmakers and congressmen have expressed concern over the wave of political uncertainty in Kenya over the past few months.
His speech is expected to seek the backing of the congress in guaranteeing a democratic space in Kenya.
Raila’s trip to the US comes just days after dropping a bombshell with calls for the formation of a six-month interim government.
The announcement has sparked a new row with the governing party Jubilee, which claims that he is only seeking unnecessary attention by igniting a crisis to get into power.
However, social media reports indicated possible protests from supporters of President- elect Uhuru Kenyatta in DC at the venue of the talks.
The Opposition leader has recently made trips abroad during the electioneering period. He travelled to the United Kingdom in October where he delivered a lecture on the current political situation in Kenya at Chatham house on Friday, October 13.
