The Directorate of Criminal Investigations in Nairobi has arrested a third suspect involved in the alleged set-up of Kirinyaga Deputy Governor Peter Ndambiri.
Ndambiri was on Monday summoned to DCI headquarters where he positively identified the suspect in police custody at an identification parade.
“During the parade, I was able to positively identify this guy who hails from Thiba village in Mwea, while the second one who is already in custody also hails from Ngurubani market,” he said.
The first suspect was arrested at the Wanguru Police Station a few days after Ndambiri was ‘busted’ in a sexual liaison with a ‘married’ woman. There are allegations that the whole thing was a setup and a ploy to extort money from the deputy governor, who reportedly was asked to pay Sh5 million. Apparently, the suspects are part of a 20-gang extortionist syndicate.
The suspect who is a Prison Wader based at Nyahururu in Nyandarua County had just been transferred from the Gathigiriri GK Prison Mwea. This, according to detectives privy to the investigations, points to a well-organised gang operating between Mwea, Thika, Kiambu and Nairobi.
Ndambiri whose rather embarrassing ordeal in April this year still lingers in the mind of some Kirinyaga residents, said the suspect arrested was among a heavily armed gang which blackmailed him while stark naked at a house in Thika town.
“The gang armed to the teeth appeared so ruthless and I had to obey every command to save my life and even repeated every word they wanted to hear from me as one of them recorded the drama on a cell phone video,” he said.
Ndambiri said it was a pity that those arrested so far were from Mwea, where he also comes from.
“After the well-choreographed setup, I sank into the lowest point in my life, but I thank God whom I trust and believe in that it did not go far before the truth started to emerge that I was actually set up by conmen and extortionists,” he told The Nairobian.
Meanwhile, an Anglican Church of Kenya priest Revered Elijah Githinji who is said to have fallen prey to the same gang in 2014 has died.
The priest was reported to have suffered from a sudden ailment said to have been triggered by the ordeal at the hands of the conmen.
