Charles Mwangi who currently lives in Toronto, Canada is staring at deportation in a month if his application seeking asylum is rejected.
Mwangi who spoke toย City News, revealed that he fled Kenya in 2019 after he received threats due to sexual orientation. He revealed that he fears that he willย face hostility if he comes back to Kenya.
He revealed that the previous applications had been declined and he only had a month in Canada if the current application was declined.
According to Mwangi who had served in Afghanistan, the Canadian government had declined his application because the officials there argued that his narrative of facing persecution in Kenya was ‘not believable’.
With his application pending, Mwangi is facing similar challenges as those in Kenya including isolation and lack of social security to carry out his day-to-day activities.
“I will be killed by my community and family if I go back to Kenya. I don’t know what can happen to me tomorrow and so I live in fear all the time,” Mwangi stated.
The asylum seeker has asked the Canadian government to approve his application to save his life “If I go back to Kenya, that’s the end of me”. He requested the foreign government to honour its promise to undocumented immigrants.
“I chose Canada because I would be safe here. It is a taboo in my community and county to be this way,” he remarked.
Last week, Canadian Immigration Minister Marc Miller announced plans to provide a way for thousands of undocumented immigrants to get citizenship. This will also include rejected asylum seekers such as Mwangi.
Miller is expected to discuss the proposal before Parliament before the members break for recess in a couple weeks.
This comes about two years after Prime Minister Justin Trudeau promised to create a pathway for these undocumented migrants and ensure they get permanent residence in Canada. He has been urged to fulfill his promise andย save thousands of migrants like Mwangi from deportation.
