The Wiper Democratic Movement has revealed plans to engage the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) in efforts to pave the way for former Vice-President Kalonzo Musyoka’s return to Parliament. The move signals growing political realignments within the opposition coalition as Wiper intensifies strategies to strengthen Kalonzo’s influence in national politics.
Speaking on Thursday, Machakos Senator Johnstone Muthama disclosed that Wiper leaders were considering dialogue with their ODM counterparts after failing to agree internally on which party Member of Parliament should vacate a seat for Kalonzo Musyoka.
According to Muthama, the party believes Kalonzo’s presence in the National Assembly is critical, especially in strengthening the opposition’s leadership and parliamentary strategy.
Wiper MPs Fail to Agree on Seat for Kalonzo
Muthama explained that discussions within Wiper Party had reached a deadlock, with MPs unable to agree on who should step down to allow Kalonzo Musyoka to contest for a parliamentary seat.
This internal disagreement reportedly pushed the party to seek assistance from ODM, a key coalition partner within the CORD alliance at the time.
The Machakos Senator emphasized that the decision was not made lightly, noting that Kalonzo’s political experience and leadership would greatly benefit the opposition in Parliament.
Rumors Over Bishop Robert Mutemi Dismissed
At the same time, Muthama dismissed widespread speculation claiming that Wiper had asked nominated MP Bishop Robert Mutemi to relinquish his parliamentary position.
Bishop Mutemi represents minority groups in the National Assembly under Wiper’s nomination slot, and rumors had circulated suggesting the party intended to replace him with Kalonzo.
However, Muthama firmly denied the claims, clarifying that no such arrangement had been made.
Kalonzo Musyoka’s Expected Role in Parliament
Wiper leaders believe Kalonzo Musyoka’s return to the National Assembly could significantly reshape opposition politics. The party is reportedly eyeing the powerful Minority Leader position for the former Vice-President.
Political analysts say the move would elevate Kalonzo’s visibility ahead of future political contests while strengthening Wiper’s bargaining power within the opposition coalition.
Kalonzo, who previously served as Kenya’s Vice-President, remains one of the country’s most influential political figures and continues to command strong support in the Ukambani region and among sections of the Kenyan diaspora following developments back home.
Growing Opposition Realignments
The latest developments highlight the growing behind-the-scenes negotiations within opposition parties as leaders position themselves for future political battles.
The possibility of an ODM MP stepping down for Kalonzo Musyoka could trigger fresh political debate across Kenya, especially among supporters of the coalition parties.
Observers say the negotiations may test the unity of the opposition alliance while also revealing the strategic importance leaders place on parliamentary influence.
