Born in Murang’a, Kenya, Rev. Dr. Penny Wanjiru Njoroge’s life story is one of courage, faith, resilience, and restoration. From growing up in deep poverty in Nairobi’s informal settlements to becoming a respected mental health professional, minister, author, and international advocate, her journey continues to inspire Kenyans in the diaspora and beyond.
Today, Rev. Dr. Penny is recognized globally for her dedication to mental health awareness, grief counseling, trauma healing, and faith-based psychological support. Her life stands as a testimony that pain does not define destiny and that healing is possible even after years of suffering.
A Difficult Beginning in Kenya
Rev. Dr. Penny Wanjiru Njoroge was born into a traditional setting in Murang’a County, where girls were often expected to focus only on marriage, motherhood, and family responsibilities. However, from an early age, she desired something more.
At just five years old, she asked her father to take her to school. That request changed the course of her family’s life forever.
Her grandfather, who was a chief at the time, strongly opposed educating girls. When her father chose to honor Penny’s dream, the family was banished from their ancestral home and denied inheritance rights.
That painful rejection marked the beginning of a long and difficult journey.
Growing Up in Nairobi Slums
Following their displacement, Penny and her family settled in Nairobi’s low-income areas including Bahati, Makadara, and Mukuru. Life was extremely difficult for the family of eleven children.
To survive, they sold vegetables grown near the Nairobi River, prepared porridge for sale, and worked tirelessly to raise school fees and daily necessities.
Despite the hardships, Penny remained focused on education and eventually earned admission to the prestigious Alliance Girls High School — a major milestone that reflected both determination and sacrifice.
Surviving Domestic Violence and Depression
While many admired her academic determination, Rev. Dr. Penny privately battled severe emotional pain for decades.
She endured 30 years of domestic violence and abuse, experiences that led to more than 25 years of depression and emotional suffering.
In 1998, the emotional burden became overwhelming, leading to two suicide attempts.
But her story did not end there.
In 2000, Rev. Dr. Penny made the courageous decision to relocate to the United States in search of healing, restoration, and a fresh start. Carrying little more than faith and determination, she began rebuilding her life from the ground up.
Pursuing Higher Education at Age 56
One of the most inspiring chapters of Rev. Dr. Penny’s story came later in life.
At the age of 56, she enrolled in college for the very first time in Birmingham, Alabama. Refusing to allow age, past trauma, or personal struggles to stop her, she pursued higher education with unwavering determination.
She eventually earned a Psy.D. in Christian Clinical Psychiatric Counseling Psychology, graduating summa cum laude with full honors.
The woman who once struggled silently with depression became a healer committed to helping others overcome emotional pain and mental illness.
