Inspiring Triumph: From Kibera Streets to the American Dream

Growing up in Kibera’s Makina neighbourhood, Jackline Motari Kwamboka learned early that life could be both challenging and beautiful at the same time. Despite the hardships that often came with growing up in an informal settlement, she remained focused on education and determined to create a different future for herself.

Jackline began her academic journey at Olympic Primary School alongside her five brothers before later joining Nyabururu Girls High School in Kisii County. After completing high school, she pursued a Bachelor’s degree in Water and Environmental Management at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology, graduating in 2023.

But beyond academics, she carried a dream that had stayed with her since childhood, the dream of studying and living in the United States. Inspired by the stories and lifestyles she watched growing up, she imagined herself one day exploring cities like New York and experiencing life beyond the environment she had always known.

That dream has now become reality. Jackline is set to pursue a Master of Business Administration at Quinnipiac University, a program she intentionally chose because of its STEM designation and focus on leadership, strategic management, sustainability, and financial management. Her goal is not only personal growth, but also to gain the business knowledge needed to one day build a startup that can create impact back home.

Her transition to studying abroad was made easier through the support she received during the application and funding process. She secured a partial scholarship and successfully obtained education financing that will help cover both tuition and living expenses while studying in the United States.

For Jackline, this journey represents much more than relocating to another country. It is the fulfillment of a lifelong dream and proof that background does not determine destiny. Her story is a powerful reminder that dreams nurtured through persistence, education, and courage can eventually become reality; no matter where the journey begins.
