The Kenyan community in Canada is mourning the heartbreaking loss of Benina Jepkoech, a 24-year-old Kenyan immigrant who is presumed drowned following a tragic vehicle crash into a river in Kamloops, British Columbia.
Benina, who had relocated from Kenya to Canada last year in pursuit of better opportunities and a brighter future, reportedly lost control of her vehicle on Sunday evening before it plunged into the fast-moving North Thompson River near Schubert Drive and Birch Avenue.
According to friends and members of the Kenyan diaspora community in Canada, Benina was driving with a 21-year-old passenger when the accident occurred. Witnesses say three brave members of the public quickly rushed to help and successfully rescued the passenger from the submerged vehicle. Sadly, Benina was swept away by the powerful river currents before rescuers could reach her.
Search Operations Suspended Due to Dangerous River Conditions
Authorities and search teams launched rescue efforts immediately after the incident. However, search and rescue operations have since been temporarily suspended due to dangerous river conditions caused by spring snowmelt, strong currents, and poor underwater visibility.
The North Thompson River has reportedly become increasingly hazardous in recent weeks as melting snow from surrounding mountains continues to raise water levels and intensify the current.
The heartbreaking incident has left family, friends, and members of the Kenyan diaspora in deep sorrow as many continue to pray for strength and comfort during this difficult period.
Friends Remember Benina as Hardworking and Humble
Friends describe Benina Jepkoech as a peaceful, humble, and hardworking young woman who had dedicated herself to building a better future abroad. According to close friends, she was working two jobs in Canada while adjusting to life in a new country.
Some friends also shared that Benina had limited driving experience in Canada and may have panicked moments before the crash occurred.
Her sudden disappearance has deeply shaken many within the Kenyan community in British Columbia and beyond.
Candlelight Vigil Held Along the River
In an emotional show of unity and support, family friends and members of the Kenyan community gathered along the river on what would have been Benina’s 24th birthday for a candlelight vigil to honor her life.
Mourners held prayers, lit candles, and shared memories as they reflected on the dreams and aspirations Benina carried when she moved to Canada.
Community members described the vigil as emotional and painful, with many struggling to come to terms with the tragic incident.
Memorial Service Planned in Brocklehurst
A memorial service in honor of Benina Jepkoech is expected to take place this Saturday in Brocklehurst as the community continues to mourn and support her grieving family.
Messages of condolences and prayers continue to pour in from Kenyans both in Canada and Kenya as many express solidarity with her loved ones during this devastating time.
The tragedy also serves as a painful reminder of the challenges many immigrants face while adapting to life in foreign countries, including unfamiliar driving conditions and harsh weather environments.
Our thoughts and prayers remain with Benina Jepkoech’s family, friends, and the entire Kenyan diaspora community during this heartbreaking period.
