Preliminary investigations by the police and ballistic experts have indicated that Moses Wetangula’s car was not shot at as had earlier been reported.
Speaking to the Nation on phone, Inspector General David Kimaiyo said that the car had hit an advertisement banner.
“The incident involving Mr Wetangula, the Bungoma senator-elect was very unfortunate. However, after preliminary investigations it was found that an advertisement banner was hit by the vehicle of the senator-elect which produced a loud noise like a gunshot. This means there was no shooting that took place as alleged,” said Mr Kimaiyo.
“In fact, the paint from the vehicle remained on the advertisement banner which is now being analysed by the police and ballistic experts. There was neither a spent cartridge at the scene nor a bullet head. The incident was caused by a blunt object,” he added.
The Inspector General appealed to politicians to remain calm and await the full investigation report.
Mr Wetangula’s car allegedly came under gunfire along Nairobi’s Mbagathi Way on Thursday night. The senator had just arrived in the city from Mombasa and was on his way home to Karen from the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport.
Accompanied by former Prime Minister Raila Odinga and his spokesperson Maseme Machuka, Mr Wetangula proceeded to the Kilimani Police Station to record a statement.
“I take this as an assassination attempt. The police have to move with speed and open investigations into the matter,” Mr Wetangula said at the time.-nation.co.ke
