The younger sister of Harambee Stars’ midfielder McDonald Mariga and former Shimba Hills star forward Purity Auma Odhiambo are on the verge of being the first Kenyans to play in USA’s elite National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA) league.

John Marcum, head coach at California Baptist, flew in last week to seal the deal with two talented forwards who have also been named in Kenya’s team to the All Africa Games in Maputo in September.

The university has pursued Wanyama, who graduated from Langata High School last year, and Odhiambo, a student at Uganda Christian University in Uganda, for two years.

“I have watched Mercy Wanyama play and I believe she is the right talent for my college,” said Marcum, who with fellow US college basketball coach Tony Mauldin watched Wanyama’s Storms beat Gladiators 66-61 in the National Classic league in Nairobi on Friday.

“Her shot selection is excellent, she is athletic and, most importantly, very defensive.”

Ronald Gundo, who graduated from Maseno School last year, travel to the US next week for trials with the 76ers and University of Maryland.
