Mr. John Washington Thomas Otieno died on December 6, 2011 at his residence in Alexandria, Virginia USA. He was born in Nairobi, Kenya on December 15, 1946 to Francis Onyango Wadeyua and Maria Onyango.
Beloved husband of Rodah Florence Otieno; adoring father of Francois Otieno, and George Otieno; and grandfather of Omarion Otieno,6, and Darien Otieno, 5. John is also survived by numerous family members based in the U.S and in Kenya. He was preceded in death by his parents and his siblings.
Mr. Otieno, a naturalized U.S Citizen, graduated with a Bachelor of Science and a Masters Degree in Statistics from the University of Nairobi, Kenya. He was fluent in Luo, Swahili, English and French. He began his illustrious banking career in 1975 at Grindlays Bank in Nairobi. In 1978, he joined the African Development Bank (AfDB) in Abidjan, Cote D’Ivoire. During his progressive 16 year tenure at the AfDB, Mr. Otieno held various roles, including Country Economist, Personal Assistant to the President, Division Chief, and Deputy Director.
In 1994, Mr. Otieno and his family relocated to Cairo-Egypt to join the newly established African Export Import Bank (Afreximbank) as the Executive Secretary of the organization. Mr. Otieno, alongside Mr. Babacar N’Diaye, a former AfDB president, was instrumental in the founding of this international financial institution. After spending 3 years with Afreximbank, Mr. Otieno relocated to the United States, where he served as an international senior consultant at the World Bank. He then decided to return to the AfDB in Tunis, Tunisia in a similar consultative role.
John, a true African statesman, was a well respected development economist; and will be especially remembered for his charismatic personality and mentorship abilities, as well as his dedication and contribution to the betterment of Africa.

Funeral Service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 17, 2011 at Cornerstone Evangelical Free Church at 3901 Gallows Road, Annandale, VA 22003.
