Recent reports highlight the severe impact of flooding in various regions of Kenya, including Mandera, Isiolo, and the Rift Valley. These floods have caused significant displacement, loss of life, and destruction of infrastructure.

In Mandera, over 34,000 households have been affected, with more than 25,000 acres of farmland submerged and over 2,600 livestock killed.

The floods have also led to the destruction of water sources and sanitation facilities, resulting in outbreaks of diseases like cholera and diarrhoea, particularly among children under five.

Similarly, in Isiolo, more than 64,000 people have been impacted by flooding, with entire villages cut off from essential services due to the overflow of the Ewaso Nyiro River. The situation has left families at high risk of hunger and waterborne diseases.

In the Rift Valley, the bursting of the Old Kijabe Dam near Mai Mahiu resulted in the deaths of at least 45 people, mostly women, children, and the elderly.

The disaster has triggered a massive humanitarian crisis, with many displaced individuals requiring urgent assistance.

These events underscore the severity of the flooding crisis in Kenya, which has been exacerbated by the El Niño phenomenon.

The government and humanitarian organizations are working to provide relief, but the situation remains dire for many affected communities.
